EXCERPT

“You have never truly touched the earth if you have not heard her cry.”

The woman locked eyes with Ava. “I want you to listen carefully, in a way you have never imagined before. Imagine the earth could speak to you. Imagine every sound it made was words for your ears only. Imagine Earth could show you all she has seen and the pain and life inside her.”

Ava nodded.

“I want you to let it in. Without fear, without worry of what you will see, let her speak to you. Listen to the earths cry.”

Ava still wasn’t so sure about the earth crying, but she definitely felt tears of her own and wasn’t sure if it was the intensity of the woman’s words or her hormones. “Okay.”

The woman grabbed Ava’s hands and pushed them deep into the fresh earth. Ava felt small roots climb between her fingers and wrap around her hands. .

She tilted her head, listened to the soft scratching of leaves, and breathed in the earthy smell coming from the rich soil beneath her hands. She closed her eyes and really felt…something. She felt a horrible wrench in her stomach. Before she could begin to worry that something was wrong with the baby, the images came. It wasn’t her baby that was in pain it was Mother Earth’s baby. The world. Everything painful inside it. She saw a group of children rail thin and sick. It was so hot and so horrible. She watched a little boy barely more than skin and bone take his last breath. She heard his mother’s miserable cry. Then she saw trees burning and forest animals fleeing. She saw war, violence, and destruction. The images came faster. Glimpses of death and destruction. Then even faster. She could barely make anything out now. The images flew by; life and death in fast-forward. She felt it though, all of it. She felt the pain of the world all at once. Hunger, fear, pain, loss. She saw the changes. First snow and ice, then new life. A small flower worked its way through a pile of snow. Green grass followed it and then a small puddle grew to a mighty river. The river changed its course over and over again, changing everything along its path as it went.

Ava! Ava!” Alec’s voice rang in her mind.

She tried to open her eyes, but couldn’t. She was trapped. She used all she had to force her lashes open, but couldn’t see a thing.

“Ava?” Alec said again.

“It’s okay. She’s alright,” the old woman said.

“Her eyes, why do they look like that?” Alec asked, “What’s happening?”

“It’s the elements response to her.”

Ava tried to speak but couldn’t. She felt the wind tickle her face. She felt the ground shake beneath her, and heard the leaves shaking on their branches.

“She’s touched it. She has truly touched her element.”

“Ava, can you hear me?” Alec said.

“Yeah, I...” Ava struggled hearing tree branches shaking and feeling the world spinning all around her.

“Let’s get you back.” Alec lifted her.

“I’m okay. She was right. I saw it all.” Ava’s vision came back then. Her eyes watered. The old woman stood in front of her. A misted vision. “Thank you,” Ava said.

“No, thank you.” Ms. Frank responded.

Ava felt the spinning slow and saw the trees reaching for her. She lifted her finger to touch the leaves of one as Alec turned. She squinted as her head rolled back and the dark sky cleared before her eyes.

Runes Series Books:

 EXCERPT

I pushed the matter of the witch aside for the rest of the day. After school, Torin dropped me off at the back our shop.

“Text me when you’re done,” he said.

The back door of the store dinged when I pushed it open. Mirage was our family shop. We did custom framing, but we also sold mirrors. Lots of mirrors. Big. Small. Runed and unruned frames. People didn’t notice them or if they did, they just assumed they were part of the designs.

Mom had hired an assistant before she left. Hawk. An Immortal. If Dad knew about him, he’d hit the roof. He didn’t like Asgardians as he liked to call Immortals and Valkyries yet he was married to Mom, a Valkyrie, and I was an Immortal. The irony was lost on him.

Hawk didn’t seem to be around, but Jared was with the one person I didn’t want to see, his wife Celine. The bubbly blonde could drive any sane person crazy with her smothering.

“Raine,” Jared said, waving me over. “How’s school?”

“Busy. Hey, Celine.”

“Oh, you poor dear.” Her beefy arms looped around me in a hug. She came up only to my chin and I had my backpack looped over my shoulder, which made our hug awkward. She stepped back and gripped my hands. “How’s your mother doing?”

“Better. She’ll be home soon.” Mom had left six weeks ago, so we’d come up with a reason for her sudden disappearance. She was officially undergoing treatment at a private institution for nervous breakdown. Dad’s illness had taken a toll on her.

“How are you coping, dear? How is your father doing?”

“Dad’s doing much better and, uh…” I tried to wiggle my hand from the woman’s, but her grip tightened. “I’m fine too.”

“Oh, how brave you are. First your father’s plane crush then the cancer and now your mother, it’s too much for someone so young to bear.” Tears rushed to her eyes.

I begged Jared with my eyes to rescue me. I had to deal with her when Dad disappeared, then when she learned he was ill and now.

“I was just telling Jared we should visit your mother. She’s been so good to us. She’s at PMI, right?”

“No, she’s at a private hospital in Portland and only family is allowed.” I finally freed my hands. “I’ll let her know you were asking about her.”

“Oh, that’s nice. As for you, young lady,” she peered at me, “I want you to know you can come to the house any time, okay? If you need anything, anything at all, call us. Do you have Jared’s cell phone number?”

“Yes, she does.” Jared practically dragged her out of the store. He came back with a sheepish expression. He ran his hand through his thinning hair. “Sorry about that. Celine has a big heart, but sometimes she gets carried away. So what can I do for you?”

“Dad wants a copy of this month’s inventory and tax forms.”

He chuckled. “The person to talk to is Hawk. Come on. He’s in the office.”

Hawk got to his feet. He was a tall man with coppery complexion, straight black hair, and brown eyes that seemed to never miss a thing. He also loved black suits. “Ms. Lorraine, this is a nice surprise.”

“Dad sent me to get a few things, Mr. Hawk.”

“Hawk. Sit, please.” He indicated the chair across from his. Jared excused himself.

“How’s your father doing?” Hawk asked. He kept the pleasantries short and soon shifted to business. An hour later, he’d explained inventory while I tried to keep up.

“Why are you telling me all this?” I finally asked.

He studied me as though trying to figure me out. I stared right back. Most Immortals I’d met were centuries old, so I tried to figure out how old he was. He could pass for a fifty-something Native American man.

“One day you’ll inherit this place, Ms. Cooper, so you should know how things are run. If you like, you could come to the shop and I can show you.”

Mom never liked me working at the store before. She’d said something about my being clumsy because of a few broken mirrors. Now I knew it had something to do with her customers. She hadn’t wanted me around Immortals. Of course, she hadn’t known about the Norns’ agenda.

“Okay. Until Mom comes back.” She’d be surprised. In a good away, I hoped.

He nodded without cracking a smile. “Every day?”

“No.” I laughed. “I have school and homework and… a life. Let’s start with three days a week. If I can stomach all the business jargons and whatnots, then I’ll add a day. If not, then I can say adios and convince myself I tried.” No, I wasn’t going to quit. I was broke. Mom had forgotten to put more money on my debit card before she left. “I get paid, right?”

“Of course. Ten dollars an hour,” he said.

Sweet. “When do I start?”

“Tomorrow. I can show you what you’ll be doing now.”

“Deal. And please call me Raine.” I leaned forward and offered him my hand, feeling more grownup than I’d felt an hour ago. I reached down for my backpack and got up. He stood too. I put the folder with the tax forms and inventory in my backpack, then left the office.

My eyes met with Andris’.

Somebody wants her sister dead …

FBI Special Agent Ann Duncan knows how to face down danger, but once again, she’s not the target. Her baby sister, Joy Davidson, has stumbled upon a conspiracy and made some powerful enemies.

Luck and God’s grace help Ann save her sister the first time, but she knows the bad guys will try again. With Patrick on a university tour and perhaps the most important case of her career weighing upon her mind, Ann must find the strength, wisdom, and heart to find out who wants her sister dead, what Joy discovered, and how to stop the conspirators. Ann instinctively knows that if she fails the Davidson case will only be the first of many tragedies.

EXCERPT

At the hospital, Ann watched miserably as the rescue squad rushed her sister to the emergency room. She found the waiting room and sat down. After ten minutes, she thought to call her parents.

What do I tell them?

Her mind rushed through several makeshift conversation starters. One by one Ann tossed them out. Before she could work up the nerve to phone home, a doctor came out to give her a progress report. It was not cheerful.

“Agent Duncan?” the doctor asked politely, startling her from the gloomy thoughts.

“What? Oh, yes, right here,” she said, jumping to her feet. “How is she?”

“She’s alive, but she slipped into a coma,” said the doctor.

Feeling like someone had smacked her with a two-by-four, Ann managed to nod and read the man’s name tag: Dr. Gerish.

“There’s no telling when she’ll wake up. I’m sorry. I wish I had better news.” Dr. Gerish turned to leave.

Throw in a crafty housekeeper, a cantankerous old cowboy, a few adorable horses, and an attraction that can’t be denied, and you have a recipe for disaster or romance. Will Nikki get her answers or will Chase offer her something better?

EXCERPT

He looked down at her, and for one brief moment, his mind went blank as he once more became aware of her as a woman and not the gifted web designer about to rescue his records. She really was exquisite. Creamy skin begging to be stroked. Lips so soft and lush a man had to be a eunuch not to want to taste them. And her eyes beckoned him, when they weren’t daring him to forget he was raised right, and haul her into his arms.

“Fitzgerald?”

Her calm voice penetrated his sensual thoughts. It annoyed him that she was so unruffled all the time when he couldn’t think straight around her.

Wanting to rattle her a little, he shifted and propped his butt on his desk, so he could see her face. “I stopped doubting you the moment you said you wouldn’t insult me by climbing into my bed.”

Her cheeks grew pink. “That is what convinced you? Why?”

“The look in your eyes said you actually meant it.” Her eyes widened, and he grinned. The flustered look suited her.

“What look?” she asked, sounding skeptical. She had a right to be. He was making up things as he went, reverting to his old self hours after meeting her.

“Like I was a troll with warts and bulbous nose.”

She laughed.

The sound washed over him, and his heartbeat shot up a notch. He feigned hurt and gave her his most whipped puppy look. “Now you are laughing at me.”

“Not at you, but at what you said.”

“Does that mean I’m not trollish?”

“It means you’re fishing for compliments.” She stood and looked down at him with a challenging twinkle in her eyes. “You are not trollish, Fitzgerald. You are just not my type.”

No way. Women loved him. Ever since he hit puberty and acquired muscles, women, young and old, never stopped chasing him. And he always accommodated them. “What the hell is your type?”
