DINNER WITH THE PARENTS

“So this boy we’re meeting tonight,” he started.

“Eocho, but he goes by Echo,” I said.

He took another one of my strawberries. “Where did you say he’s from again?”

I sighed. “I didn’t. Ask him when you meet him tonight. It will give you something to talk about.”

“Why are you being so secretive? You always had plenty to say about your previous boyfriends.”

I wasn’t good at lying and didn’t want to mess up the background we’d created for Echo. “That’s because he’s not just a boyfriend. He’s special.”

Dad grinned, obviously not believing me. When he reached for another strawberry, I moved the bowl away.

“Get your own.” I kissed his cheek and cradled my bowl of berries. Mom was stepping off the stairs and from the smile on her face, the two of them had been upstairs together, which meant Dad hadn’t been napping. “The cream is actually sweeter, this time,” I added.

“Really?” Even though he answered me, his eyes were on Mom. He could be so absentminded when he was drafting a book, but when that focus was on Mom, it was just as intense.

I didn’t bother to respond because I knew he wouldn’t hear me. I reached for my backpack and slipped past him.

“That’s because I added honey,” Mom said just as I reached her. “How was school, sweetie?” She cupped my face and planted a kiss on my temple.

Oh, yeah. They’d definitely been doing it. Mom was chipper than usual. “Ok. Do you need help with anything? The casserole smells good.”

“Thank you, dear. No, I don’t need help, until later when it’s time to set the table. So head on upstairs and finish your homework.”

I kissed her cheek and grinned. It was a Friday, so my homework could wait. They wanted me out of the kitchen, and I was more than happy to oblige them. When I glanced back, Dad had his arms around Mom’s waist.

Echo wasn’t upstairs. I stripped and headed to the shower. Maybe he’d catch me and join me in the shower. I grinned at my thoughts.

No such luck.

I washed my hair and put it in rollers, then glanced out the window to see if the soul was still out there. He was gone. Finding the best outfit for tonight wasn’t easy. Not that dressing for Echo was difficult. He didn’t care for sexy outfits. He liked dresses he could remove with minimum fuss, and it just so happened that I loved dresses too. The problem was we were in spring and last year’s spring clothes weren’t right for tonight.

Sighing, I decided on a simple floral dress from last fall and ballet flats. I added a tiny jacket. I was finishing my makeup when Echo stepped into my room. He’d removed his duster and vest, but still wore the leather pants and a medieval tunic shirt, which I was now convinced were tailor-made just for him. If he added ruffles and lace, he’d pass for a throwback lord or a pirate.

He came to stand behind my chair and studied my reflection, a glint entering his golden eyes. “You are breathtaking,” he whispered.

“So are you.”

BLURB

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.
