I love Books
Guest Post
by: Sheldon Townsend

I love books.  Not just reading them and owning them, but I love books like I love liberty and justice.  The invention of the book was one of the mankind's greatest achievements and I think there can be a direct connection between the Gutenberg press and the freedoms we all enjoy.  Books did two things: they made memory permanent and information democratic.  You could find a book and learn.  You didn't have to find an old person whose memory might be faulty.  And it made knowledge democratic, not the sole domain of the cabal of the lucky few (call them the knowledge 1%) who could afford manuscripts.  Books became cheap and plentiful thanks to Gutenberg.  And people became knowledgeable.  It broke the back of feudalism and the Catholic Church's monopoly on God, both of which ended the dark ages and led to the Renaissance.  This led to the Enlightenment and finally to the liberties those of us in the West enjoy.  It is telling that one of the first thing tyrants want to control is books.  So I love books.  You could say I'm intoxicated by them.

The Year I Became an Author; Guest Post by Cameo Renae + GIVEAWAY

The Year I Became an Author

Well, I thought I’d do a random post on what I learned this year, as far as being an author.
First… I actually became an author. Whoo-hoo! J

On April 30, 2011, In My Dreams was released. It’s my first novel and is a YA Supernatural Romance / Thriller / Mystery. I decided to Self-Publish, because it seemed like the perfect thing to do at the time. With the finished manuscript in my hands, I just needed to know what to do next… I knew ZERO! I was so clueless about the whole process, but then… I found Amazon.com. They have their own publishing company, which is pretty awesome.

The Healing Art of Writing by Candy Little

The Healing Art of Writing

My writing journey is a bit unconventional from most writers. I never thought much about becoming a writer when I was young. I dabbled with some poetry in high school, but nothing serious. And, once when I had Saturday detention, I filled the two hours by writing a short, horror story about an ax murderer.  After graduation, I got married and started my family I didn’t have time for writing.
That is the prequel my story. The first chapter of my writing career started fourteen years ago when I was twenty-eight years old.

Becoming Amish

Guest Post with Samantha Bayarr

Becoming Amish:

When I set out to write my first Amish romance, I wanted it to be out of the ordinary…one that would stand out in the crowd of Amish romance novels.

What I got was a re-write of my own history with a lot of twists!

Being my first Amish romance novel, I wanted to do what all the “experts” advised and write what I know…I came from a big family, and had spent a lot of time on my uncle’s farm as a young child, and I lived in Goshen, Indiana for several years and interacted with the Amish and observed their way of life, so I already had half the battle played out in my head.

Guest Post By Andy Holloman

Discovering the Differences in Social Media Sites - Any one that is embarking on the path of publishing a novel will be inundated with well meaning advice regarding the importance of using social media to promote, market, sell, etc. So, after receiving said advice, I embarked on this path six months ago. Now, like many folks, I had joined the Facebook revolution a while back (for me, back in 2009) and left after a few months of not finding much value. (This was prior to having any inkling that my novel was going to be published.) I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable FB was when I began to really treat it as a social "place" and started to reach out to folks that I had not seen in many years, or even those folks that I saw fairly regularly. It opened up a "window" that allowed me to interact with people in a way that would not have existed without FB. I was gaining "friends" and I was gleaning information about folks that I would NEVER have received without FB.

Guest Post With Author Kristie Cook

Today we have bestselling and award-winning author Kristie Cook with us. Kristie is the author of the Soul Savers Series, which includes Promise (#1), Purpose (#2) and the newly released Genesis: A Soul Savers Novella.

Thank you, Christina, for having me! It's such a pleasure to meet new people and readers. When readers hear about my newest release, Genesis: A Soul Savers Novella, the first question I get is “What’s a novella?” which is then followed by a discussion of why I made this a novella. In short, because the characters ran away with me. In long, well…here goes.

I'm Sorry

If you have been waiting on a package or an email from me. I am so sorry. I have had a rough week. We had an infant in the family rushed to the ER because he wasn't breathing and had a small drop of blood under his nose. He was shipped to the women and children's hospital. He has been on life support ever since. We are praying for him and we would greatly appreciate your prayers as well. We were told that he is 1/3 brain dead and we don't know what is going to happen from here.

And as if that wasn't bad enough...

Farsighted By: Emlyn Chand

About the book:
Alex Kosmitoras’s life has never been easy. The only other student who will talk to him is the school bully, his parents are dead-broke and insanely overprotective, and to complicate matters even more, he’s blind. Just when he thinks he’ll never have a shot at a normal life, a new girl from India moves into town. Simmi is smart, nice, and actually wants to be friends with Alex. Plus she smells like an Almond Joy bar. Yes, sophomore year might not be so bad after all.

Unfortunately, Alex is in store for another new arrival—an unexpected and often embarrassing ability to “see” the future. Try as he may, Alex is unable to ignore his visions, especially when they begin to suggest that Simmi is in danger. With the help of the mysterious psychic next door and new friends who come bearing gifts of their own, Alex must embark on a journey to change his future.

Guest Post by Author Emlyn Chand

This is a guest post by Emlyn Chand, author of Farsighted

When did you have enough confidence in your abilities to officially call yourself a writer?

For me, it was when I first received money for my work as a freelance columnist. For you, it may have been when you finished the first chapter of your first novel or won a prize for a short story. Maybe you never had any qualms about saddling yourself with this label. Maybe you still don’t consider yourself a “real writer.”

Morrigan Michele Guest Post

Hi everyone, I am Morrigan Michele- one of the authors of the Blood and Magick Series. As many of you all know, Betrayed-Blood and Magick Book 1 just released October 1st and we couldn't be more excited! What I really wanted to do today, though, is let you all in on some things you might not know about my sister, Misty, and myself. Misty has always been an avid reader. Her favorite genre is paranormal fantasy, but she has been known to read some paranormal romance from time to time. I, on the other hand, didn't start really reading until I was into my 20's. It wasn't that I didn't like to read, but more that I hadn't found anything that caught and kept my interest. I suppose I can blame that fact on Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I was in highschool when I began reading them, and after that nothing could compare; that is until Misty introduced me to Christine Feehan's Drake Sisters Series. After that, Misty and I were our own little book club. We would take turns buying books and discussing them. That is how we got the idea to write a book of our own.

About the book: ...Seeing her inside the window, he feels a sense of comfort and begins to walk toward the house. Feeling the breeze at his back again, he turns to see knights upon horses stampeding towards him, as if he were invisible. Whirling around as they gallop past him with torches and weapons, he watches as the soldiers invade his home. "No!" he shouts silently, hearing nothing immerse from inside his throat. The sounds of murder break over the wind as she moans and screams to the high heavens and is locked inside, while the remaining soldiers light his house in a wreath of flames. Suddenly, the world he's surrounded in slowly turns black, while the roar of the fire and her screams echo inside his mind...

After the horrific murder of his wife, the framing of his personality deemed insane, and the imprisonment that left a scar on the face of the people, Hadrian is now part of a plot to wreak havoc on those who took away the love of his life, help regain the throne and the council to the exiled Prince Moroven, and give freedom to those who’ve been stripped of it in the name of his wife, Emeline.

The other social media site that writers are frequently directed to is Twitter. Likewise, I had "twitted" around with the site but had dropped out. In June of 2011, I dove back into the Twitter world and started to learn why folks found the site addictive. Twitter opened up a much different world of connections for me than Facebook. On Twitter, I directed my attention to following and connecting with writers, editors, publishers, etc. and - lo and behold - I was making friends with semi-famous folks! I could send them a quick question and they would respond. WOW! Twitter truly is unique (in my experience) in regards to how you can interact with people you admire. Furthermore, my twitter universe is MUCH more international as compared to FB. I have become friends with people all over the world and I have learned things about writers AND readers in other parts of the world. In the past few weeks, I find myself drawn more to Twitter than FB because, dare I say it, Twitter is more fun!
Imagine that. Social Media can be fun. Just remember - Be social first in order to get the most out of these sites. Going to heavy on the selling/promoting side will make your friends and followers "tune you out" which total defeats the purpose.

Random Fact for the Week :)

In 1807 Webster began compiling an expanded and fully comprehensive dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language; it took twenty-seven years to complete.

WOW 27 years!? But is the dictionary ever REALLY complete? I mean don't they add new words to it all the time? I know "ain't" wans't in the dictionary when I was a kid, but it is now!

Guest Post from Author Monique O'Connor James

The Road to Jamais Vu
I thought I’d share a little about the back ground of Jamais Vu and how it came to be.  The most frequently asked question I get is, how did you come up with the idea for your story? Every story has its own history and its own path to publication.
The Keepers was a very personal story for me.  It was the first thing I wrote after my mom died and thereby has a lot of autobiographical “stuff” in it.  I was at that time dealing with grief, and writing the book helped me to put aside some of the pain I was feeling.
At this point I wasn’t even thinking about getting published.  You have to realize I wrote seven complete manuscripts in three years, before I decided I really wanted to put my work out there.  Jamais Vu didn’t come to me in a dream, or from my own experience, but the plot came from something very real that happened to my mother when I was just a baby.

Random book fact for the week ;)

The origin of the Latin word for book, liber, comes from the Romans who used the thin layer found between the bark and the wood (the liber) before the times of parchment. The English word comes from the Danish word for book, bog, meaning birch tree, as the early people of Denmark wrote on birch bark.

Sketchy Postal Service

I received an envelope in the mail Saturday from an author. It was sent to me via media mail (which I don't recommend for sending ANYTHING) but still!

Disrupted Lives by: Brenda Youngerman

Synopsis: A name does not make a person, a person makes a name.
Such is the theme of Disrupted Lives, the story of how one adopted child touches and intersects with many lives, but ends up destroying one family name, while building another family's legacy.
Darren and Amelia Kane were high school sweethearts torn apart by war. They reunite and discover that they both must put their nightmares behind them to build a life together. Betrayed by her parents, Amelia was earlier forced to give up their child.
Fiona Porter and Sterling Lake are thrown together as part of a business proposition. They end up surprising both their families by enriching the Lake empire and family name. The Lakes become synonymous with society, power and money, and their children must carry that torch forward at all cost. When an adopted grandchild is brought into the family, he questions the definition of "family."

Review: I loved this story. It is very heart wrenching and I have to admit it was hard to hold back the tears at times but it was totally worth it! Brenda did a wonderful job intertwining the two families over the three generations covered in this story. She also showed how money and power are not the key to happiness. My favorite line in the book is "A name does not make a person, a person makes a name." I beleive that Ben Lake's character proved this line true in more ways than one.

Alexander Vanquish the Night by: Lauren K. Pomeroy

Synopsis: Gazing out of the open window, Alexander stared into the cold blizzard that swarmed across the sun and placed the land into a deep freeze. Frost crested the iron windowpanes and clung to the glass. He held his sword close to his chest and watched as the snow continued to fall. A deep sinking feeling came creeping silently into his heart; an even greater realization that his father was lost in battle, when his black stallion came into the courtyard with no rider...

After the mysterious raid of his family in search of claiming their lives, the young Alexander is suddenly hunted by the soldiers who killed his stable structure and damaged his past when he murders the men responsible and escapes for those still after his life. From that moment on he became a threatening, untamable man who's journey for justice turns to vengeance. Can a man who has become a destructive monster, ever truly turn back to what he was before? Or will the lingering rage and deception turn him into an even greater threat?

Review: This books is very different from what I would usually read. Not to say that it isn't just as good. Alexander and his friends go through hell and back to save the ones they love. Alexander gives up a lot for the love of his life and still the ending isn't what any of them desire. Life is very unpredictable and Alexander and his friends find that out the hard way. The twists and turns in this book make it very alluring and hard to put down.

J K Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth book in the acclaimed series, had a first-run print of 8.5 million copies. This is approximately 80 times the average bestseller!

This beat the previous book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which had a first-run print of 4.8 million copies.

Secret Bloodline by: Talia Jager

Synopsis: What sixteen-year-old Kairi doesn’t know is that vampires do exist and she’s one of them. She was left in foster care when she was very little and grew up away from her world. Then she began to change. Feeling out of place and confused, she ran away from her foster home. A coven takes her under their wings and trains her. When she is told her parents didn’t just abandon her, but died protecting her, she sets off on a mission to find their killer.

And then she meets Aiden…a vampire hunter.

Review: I must say Talia has outdone herself this time! I absolutely LOVED her book, The Ultimate Sacrifice, but this one was even BETTER!

Talia put a new spin on vampires in this novel that I wasn't expecting and that made it all the more interesting. The connection between Aiden and Kairi was very suprising but I love the way Talia made it all fit together. I think Lizzie's decision suprised me more than anything else in the book! It was absolutely a GREAT read!

Random book fact of the week :)

This one is kinda creepy!

Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story in 1838, "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", in which three shipwreck survivors in an open boat kill and eat the fourth, a man named Richard Parker. In 1884, in the real world, three shipwreck survivors in an open boat killed and ate the fourth, whose name was Richard Parker.

See. Creepy, right?!

Fangs Rule by: Amy Mah

Synopsis: A self help guide by Amy Mah (Vampire) for teenage vampire girls, the guide is fully illustrated by manga Artist Heby and is written in an easy to follow A - Z format explaining everything a teenage vampire girl would need to know about living life as a modern Vampire. What is fashionable to wear when eating out? Fang maintenance & how to keep your claws sharp. Should you let a boy bite you on the first date? Easy to understand clear advice is given to every day problems Example: When you get an urge to bite: We all get those normal urges to bite things, and I must point out it is very normal, Claws are all well and good in a fight but a bite gives the extra advantage of getting a refreshing drink at the same time. Lots of girls worry about showing their Fangs in public believing that to show your fangs is rude, but don't be shy they can be a girls greatest asset (ok second greatest asset) if a boy is being rude to you, don't just snarl at him, just bite him! You are a vampire why do you think you have sharp teeth if not for sinking them into a boy that is being rude to you.

Review: This is an outragiously funny piece of work. I laughed all the way through this! Amy Mah has a wonderful sense of humor and she did a wonderful job with this guide to being a vampire! There are lots of things in this guide that I have never heard of before. I only thought I knew vampires! This guide is VERY well written and easy to follow. Amy Mah is a very talented lady :)
